Magnesium hydroxide is an inorganic flame retardant filler for polymer matrix composites. Like aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide flame retardants act as flame retardants by chemical decomposition and heat absorption when heated, so they have the advantages of non-toxic, low smoke and stable chemical properties and no secondary pollution. However, compared with halogen-containing organic flame retardants, to achieve a considerable flame retardant effect, the filling amount should generally reach more than 50%. Because magnesium hydroxide is inorganic, the compatibility between the surface and polymer base material is poor, so high filling amount, if it is not surface modified treatment, fill to polymer.  After the material, it will lead to the decline of the mechanical properties of the composite. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out surface modification treatment to improve its compatibility with polymer-based materials, so that the mechanical properties of the filling materials do not decline, and even some of the mechanical properties of the materials are improved.

With the development of polymer materials industry, fiber, resin, chemical industry, construction, transportation, rubber and other synthetic materials are increasing. however, most polymers are easily combustible materials. in many applications, flame retardants need to be added to polymer materials to prevent fire. magnesium hydroxide is an important inorganic flame retardant. it has many advantages, such as good thermal stability, no volatilization, no precipitation, no toxic gas, no pollution and so on. it is a green and environmentally friendly flame retardant. it is widely used in plastics, rubber, flame retardant and tobacco and resin polymer materials.


 Inorganic flame retardants are ideal pollution-free flame retardants for application and development. Magnesium hydroxide flame retardants, as one of the main products, have the advantages of non-toxic, smoke-suppressive, non-volatile, good thermal stability and no production of corrosive gases, and meet the strict requirements of high efficiency, flame retardant, low smoke and low toxicity of flame retardants at present. Magnesium hydroxide is widely used in the field of polymer flame retardancy because of its high thermal decomposition temperature, high efficiency in promoting carbonation of substrate and strong acid removal ability.


Because of the large particle size of micron magnesium hydroxide powder and the poor affinity of PVC system, the dispersion is poor, which greatly reduces the mechanical and mechanical properties of the system. and the surface of the modified micron powder will be coated with a layer of organic matter, which can enhance and PVC the compatibility of the system, thus improving the mechanical and mechanical properties of the system to a certain extent. At the same time, because of the small particle size and high surface energy of the unmodified nano-magnesium hydroxide, it is easy to agglomerate to form aggregates, which makes the distribution of magnesium hydroxide powder in the PVC system uneven, and causes it to have more oxygen index than the unmodified and modified micron grade magnesium hydroxide flame retardant in the PVC system. low; however, the modified nano-magnesium hydroxide powder overcomes the disadvantage of easy agglomeration because of the decrease of surface energy, which makes magnesium hydroxide better dispersed in the PVC system, so the oxygen index rises, although the influence of mechanical properties is greatly reduced, which reflects the superiority of nano-powder.
