with the development of polymer materials industry, fiber, resin, chemical industry, construction, transportation, rubber and other synthetic materials are increasing. however, most polymers are easily combustible materials. in many applications, flame retardants need to be added to polymer materials to prevent fire. magnesium hydroxide is an important inorganic flame retardant. it has many advantages, such as good thermal stability, no volatilization, no precipitation, no toxic gas, no pollution and so on. it is a green and environmentally friendly flame retardant. it is widely used in plastics, rubber, flame retardant and tobacco and resin polymer materials.


 Magnesium hydroxide flame retardant is a promising inorganic flame retardant filler for polymer matrix composites. Like aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide flame retardants act as flame retardants by chemical decomposition and heat absorption when heated, so they have the advantages of non-toxic, low smoke and stable chemical properties and no secondary pollution. However, compared with halogen-containing organic flame retardants, to achieve a considerable flame retardant effect, the filling amount should generally reach more than 50%. Because magnesium hydroxide is inorganic, the compatibility between the surface and polymer base material is poor, so high filling amount, if not surface modification treatment, filling.  to polymer materials, which will lead to the decline of the mechanical properties of the composites. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out surface modification treatment to improve its compatibility with polymer-based materials, so that the mechanical properties of the filling materials do not decline, and even some of the mechanical properties of the materials are improved.
